March 29 - The birthday of Man O’War

Filed under: Horses in History — Terry @ 11:52 pm

The legendary thoroughbred racehorse Man O’War was foaled on this date in 1917 at Faraway Farm in Lexington, Kentucky.  This great horse had unbelievable speed on the track and was only beaten once, and that was after a bad start.  He held many world and track records.
“Big Red” was his common name.  He was a deep chestnut color and he stood 16 hands 1 5/8 inches.  He raced at around 1100 pounds and after his retirement he filled out to a little over 1300 pounds.  He had a long body shape and his gaskins were especially well muscled.   His stride was over 25 feet.  He was a good sire and he lived 30 years, dying in the year 1947.
